About this activity

The Goechala Trek is one of the most popular treks located in the Kanchenjunga National Park in Sikkim, India. It is a challenging trek, but it is also incredibly rewarding, with stunning views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range, including Mt. Kanchenjungha, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Kumbhakarna, Mt. Rathong, Mt. Kokthang, Mt. Kabru North, Mt. Kabru South & Kabru Dome and many more, as well as diverse Himalayan landscapes and rich local culture.
The trek begins from the small town of Yuksom which is located in the western part of Indian state of Sikkim and the trek takes you through dense forests of colorful rhododendron and others, picturesque meadows, and enchanting mountain passes. Along the way, you will encounter charming mountain villages, Buddhist monasteries and friendly locals.
The trek typically takes 10 days to complete, covers a distance of around 90 kms., and it is important to be in good physical condition before attempting it. The highest point on the trek is Goechala 1st View Point, which is located at an altitude of 4,610 Mtr. ( 15,100 Ft. ). So it is important to acclimatize to the altitude gradually to avoid altitude sickness.

Included/Excluded

  • Accommodation : We will provide you standard rooms at Yuksom in a homestay/lodge and you will be accommodated in tent during the trek on triple sharing basis.
  • Meals : We will provide food from Day 01 evening tea snacks to last day breakfast (Non-veg and veg).
  • Transportation : We will provide 01 Non Luxury (Non AC) vehicle (Tata Sumo/Mahindra Bolero/similar) for arrival and departure transfer from NJP/IXB/Siliguri to Yuksom.
  • (Please Note : Vehicle will be provided only for single point pick up and drop and no sightseeing is included).
  • ***Car Parking, Permits, Toll-Taxes, Tips for the vehicle & driver is included.
  • Trek Equipment : We will provide Tent, Sleeping bag, mattress, Kitchen tent and utensils.
  • Permit : Entry fees & forest camping charges of Kanchenjungha National Park.
  • Safety Equipment : We will provide emergency medicine, although we suggest you to carry your own medicine if you have any personal medicine requirement.
  • One experienced trek leader from our company.
  • Porter, Yak / Mule / Horse for central luggage carrying only (no personal luggage).

  • Any food during transit to and from NJP/IXB/Siliguri to Yuksom.

Itinerary

After arrival at NJP/IXB/Siliguri, meet with our company representative and then drive to Yuksom (150 km., 7 hr., 5,840 ft.), base camp of Goechala trek. On the way you will see the pristine Teesta River. After 3 hr. you will reach at Jorthang and take your lunch. After lunch you will drive another 3 hr. to reach at Yuksom. After arrival at Yuksom check-in & get fresh. Then spend your leisure time by visiting at Karthok Lake & Monastery. You can visit local market for some last minute shopping before your dream trek of Goechala. Night stay at Yuksom in a hotel/homestay/lodge.

After breakfast complete your permit process to enter at Kanchenjunga National Park. Then start your trek from Yuksom towards Sachen (8 km., 5 hr., 7,200 ft.). The trail passes through three bridges along with Pha Khola, Tshushay khola, Mentogang Khola and offers glimpses of dense forests. Trail is very steep at some area. The campsite in Sachen is located in a beautiful clearing surrounded by forest where you will see a small wooden hut, which is used for cooking. Night stay at Sachen in tent.

After breakfast start your trek from Sachen to Tshoka (8 km., 5 hr., 9,720 ft.). After few ascent, the trail will go down to a long & beautiful suspension bridge over river Prekchu. Then the trail is a completely ascent through forests and meadows. 2 hr. after starting the trek, you will reach at a small settlement called Bakhim (8,650 ft.). Here you can take some rest and enjoy a stunning view of dense forest of nearby hills. Then after 3 hr. you will reach at Tsokha. The campsite in Tshoka is located next to a serene lake and small & beautiful monastery with stunning views of the Mt. Kanchenjunga mountain range. Night stay at Tsokha in tent.

Start your trek from Tshoka towards Dzongri (9 km., 6 hr., 12,310 ft.). The trail is a completely steep ascent through meadows and alpine forests. The trail becomes more difficult to walk because of wet wooden log and cutting stone. 2 hr. after starting the trek, you will reach at Phedang (12,100 ft.). Here you can take some rest and enjoy a hot noodles. After that you will walk through Rhododendron forest till Deorali, which is nice place to take some rest. Then after 3 hr. you will reach at Dzongri. The campsite in Dzongri is located in a stunning location, with panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and other Himalayan peaks. Night stay at Dzongri in tent.

Early morning before breakfast climb to Dzongri Top (13,670 ft.) to witness the stunning sunrise with a 180 degree view of Mt. Kanchenjungha mountain range. After spending some time at Dzongri Top, come down to the campsite & take your breakfast. After breakfast start your trek from Dzongri to Thansing valley (10 km., 6 hr., 12,900 ft.). The trail from Dzongri to Thansing starts from a gradual ascent through alpine meadows, then go down towards Kokchurang (12,100 ft.), which is located beside river Prekchu. Here you will see a small & beautiful Log Hut for trekkers. Then you will walk towards the last stretch of the day for 1 hr. through mystic forests. The campsite in Thansing is beautiful wide open valley, with close views of the Mt. Pandim and other Himalayan peaks. Night stay at Thansing in tent.

Early morning you can enjoy the wide glimpse of Mt. Pandim and other Himalayan peaks. After breakfast trek from Thansing to Lamuney (4 km., 2 hr., 13,650 ft.). The trail to Lamuney is quite gradual through alpine meadow along with river Prekchu, but it is the easiest part of your entire Goechala trek. The campsite in Lamuney is located in a stunning location, where you can witness a panoramic views of the Mt. Pandim, Mt. Tinchenkhang and other Himalayan peaks including Mt. Kanchenjunga. After reach a Lamuney, you can walk further 2 km. towards Goechala, to enjoy the stunning beauty of Samiti Lake. Night stay at Lamuney in tent.

Today at 3.30 am you will start trek towards your final destination Goechala (15,100 ft. 4 km., 4 hr.) and after spend some time there, you will be back to Thansing (total 13 km, 10-12 hours). After start from Lamuney campsite you will walk gradually till Samiti Lake. After pass the lake you will walk through a steep rocky terrain until Goechala 1st viewpoint. Here you will see one of the best views of nature, when the first light of Sun kiss the Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks. Goechala is a high mountain pass that offers stunning close views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range and other Himalayan peaks such as Mt. Rathong, Mt. Kokthang, Mt. Kabru North, Kabru South, Kabru Dome and many more. The trek to Goechala is challenging, but the views from the top are well worth it and you will never forget this view in your lifetime. After spend some time at the viewpoint and soak the beauty of nature, you will trek back towards Lamuney campsite. It will take 2 hr. to reach at Lamuney. Here you will take your much needed breakfast, after a long tiring walk. After breakfast take some rest. Then you will come back to Thansing campsite & spend your night there in tent.

After breakfast trek back from Thansing to Tshoka via Kokchurang & Phedang (16 km, 7 hr.). The trail from Thansing to Kokchurang is a gradual descent. Then You will take the diversion to the left inside the forest instead of climbing up to Dzongri and the trail is almost plain & goes parallel with river Prekchu at one side & Rhododendron trees at other side and only switch between mountains till Phedang. After reach at Phedang you will take some hot noodles and then trek to last stretch of the day Tsokha, which is a gradual descent through meadows and forests. After reach at Tsokha, you will stay there in tent.

Trek from Tshoka to Yuksom (15 km, 6 hr.). The trail from Tsokha to Yuksom finish much faster, as from Tsokha to the 4th river bridge over river Prekchu via Bakhim is pure descent, then the trail goes up and down till Yuksom via Sachen. You have to make sure to be careful at the time of descending as it gives a lot of pressure to your knees. After reach at Yuksom take a refreshing shower and testy lunch. Then spend your leisure evening at local market or you can enjoy a campfire here to celebrate your summit of Goechala. Night stay at Yuksom in a hotel/homestay/lodge.

After breakfast drop at NJP/IXB/Siliguri via Jorethang (150 km., 7 hr.).
