The Varsey Phalut Trek is a 06 day moderate trek and covers almost a distance of around 70 kms., and located partially at the Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in Sikkim and the Singalila National Park in West Bengal, India. It is a popular trek for its stunning 360 degree view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga and Annapurna mountain range and other Himalayan peaks such as Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and many more., as well as its colorful rhododendron forests, rich birdlife including Himalayan pheasants, woodpeckers, and warblers.
The trek begins in the village of Hilley, which is located in the western part of Indian state of Sikkim and takes you through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests, picturesque meadows and enchanting mountain passes. Along the way, you will encounter various colors of rhododendron in bloom during the spring months, fragrant bush of magnolia and narrow mountain streams.
The highest point on the trek is Phoktey Dara, which is located at an altitude of 3,733 Mtr ( 12,245 Ft. ). Phoktey Dara is a popular viewpoint which is famous for its stunning 360 degree view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga and Annapurna mountain range and other Himalayan peaks such as Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and many more. Phalut is also a beautiful place to witness the stunning 360 degree views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Annapurna mountain range and other Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and many more.
The Varsey Phalut Trek is a great option for travelers who are looking for a moderate trek with stunning views of the Himalayas, as well as a chance to experience the colorful rhododendron and rich culture of West Bengal and Sikkim.
After arrival at NJP/IXB/Siliguri, meet with our company representative and then drive to Hilley (140 km., 7 hr., 10,000 ft.), base camp of Varsey-Phalut trek. On the way you will see the pristine Teesta River. After 3 hr. you will reach at Jorthang and take your lunch. After lunch you will drive another 3 hr. to reach at Hilley. After arrival at Hilley check-in & get fresh. After getting fresh, go for a small walk, to help your body to get adjusted with the high altitude of Hilley. Night stay at Hilley in a homestay/lodge.
After breakfast complete your permit process from local forest department office to enter at Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. Then start your trek from Hilley to Jorebutey via Varsey and Deolingalidhap (13 km., 7 hr., 10,000 ft.). The trail from Hilley to Varsey (4 km., 2 hr.) starts from a quite gradual ascent through dense forest of bamboo and colorful Rhododendron trees. You will see a wooden trekkers’ hut at Varsey, which is also called ‘Guras Kunj’ (Guras is the local name of Rhododendron). If you are lucky than here you will get a stunning view of Kanchenjunga mountain range. After Varsey the trail goes few ascent and then will go down until Deolingalidhap (6 km., 3 hr.) through dense forest. Deolingalidhap is a huge grassland surrounded by dense forest, where you can take some rest and fill your water bottle from a small mountain stream. Then you will walk completely ascent through forests till Jorebutey (3 km., 2 hr.). Jorebutey is located in a small hilltop surrounded by dense forest, where you will see a small kitchen build for the trekkers. Night stay at Jorebutey in tent.
After breakfast trek from Jorebutey to Kalizar (10 km., 7 hr., 11,800 ft.). This route is long and steep at most of the part. After 2 hr. of walking through forest you will reach at Achalley, where you can get a stunning view of Kanchenjunga mountain range if weather permits. Then after 2 more hour of walking through downhill forest trail, you will reach at a huge alpine meadow surrounded by forest, called Thulodhap. Here at Thulodhap you can take some rest and fill your water bottle from a small mountain stream running through the meadow. If you are lucky than here you will get a glimpse of Kanchenjunga mountain range. Then after 4 hr. of tiring walk through steep trail you will reach at Kalizar. The campsite in Kalizar is located in a stunning location, where you will get to witness breathtaking panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range from your tent itself. Night stay at Kalizar in tent.
Today at 4.30 am you will start trek towards Phoktey Dara to witness a stunning sunset (1 hr., 12,000ft.) and after spend some time there, you will be back to Kalizar. After start from Kalizar campsite you will walk through a steep rocky terrain until Phoktey Dara. Here you will see one of the best views of nature, when the first light of Sun kiss the Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks. Phoktey Dara offers stunning views of the Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Annapurna and Kanchenjunga mountain range. The view from the Phoktey Dara top are well worth it and you will never forget this view in your lifetime. After spend some time at Phoktey Dara and soak the beauty of nature, you will trek back towards Kalizar. It will take 30 min. to reach at Kalizar. Here you will take your breakfast. After breakfast start your trek from Kalizar to Phalut via Singalila Pass (7 km., 5 hr., 11,800 ft.). The trail is very steep at most of the area till Singalila Pass. Singalila Pass is a high-altitude pass that separates the Indian state of West Bengal, Sikkim and our neighbor state Nepal. It is also one of the best place to get a 360 degree view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhoste, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Annapurna and Kanchenjunga mountain range. After crossing the pass, trekking trail is gradually ascent through the meadow till Phalut. After arriving at Phalut you will see a Trekkers’ Hut, a forest rest house and an Indian Army camp. After getting fresh at Phalut, at the time of sunset you can walk towards Phalut top, where you will get a stunning 360 degree view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhoste, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Annapurna and Kanchenjunga mountain range. Night stay at Phalut.
Today at 5.30 am you will go to Phalut top to see the sunrise over Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks. After spend some time at Phalut top, you will be back to Phalut & take your breakfast. After breakfast start your trek from Phalut to Gorkhey via Alubari (16 km., 5 hr.). The trail from Phalut to Gorkhey is completely descent through bamboo, rhododendron forest. You have to be conscious at time of descending as it gives very much pressure on your knees. After 3 hr. you will reach at Alubari campsite, here you can take some rest as here you will get a small tea shop. After getting some rest, you will walk towards the last stretch of your trek to Gorkhey. After reach at Gorkhey, you will be amazed to see the stunning view of this beautiful green mountain valley. First unpack your Rucksack and here you can take a refreshing cold shower at Rammam river. After the shower, enjoy your lunch and then roam around this beautiful valley. In the evening you can enjoy a campfire to celebrate your successfully completed trek. Night stay at Gorkhey.
After breakfast prepare for the last 4 km. trek from Gorkhey to Voreng through steep trail surrounded by Pine tree. After 2 hr. you will reach at Voreng and then drop to NJP/IXB/Siliguri (130 km., 7 hr.).
